In 1989, Johnson County Community Corrections was developed after local stakeholders came together to seek alternative sentencing options for the county criminal justice system. Prior to its development, the only sentencing options for the court system was incarceration in the local jail or with the Indiana Department of Correction or probation.

In 1990, Juvenile programming was added to the list of programming offered by Johnson County Community Corrections which included the use of electronically monitored home detention and community service. The development and implementation of Juvenile Community Corrections laid the foundation for what would become a sophisticated and revered juvenile justice system.

In 2007 the Juvenile Practice Improvement Committee was formed for the betterment of practices within the Juvenile Justice System. This committee of stakeholders would be the driving force for the implementation of the Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative (JDAI), a national movement reforming juvenile justice that is now utilizes in 250 counties nation wide. These efforts have reduced daily detention populations while maintaining and improving public safety.

In 2014, the Indiana Department of Correction orders that all juvenile community correction agencies in the state become their own independent agencies and no longer under the umbrella or supervised by adult agencies.

Johnson County Juvenile Justice implemented practices of Trust Based Relational Intervention in 2019. This attachment based trauma informed care allows us to treat the root cause of juvenile delinquency to ensure a successful transition into adulthood. By treating potential trauma experienced by the juvenile, we aim to break the generational cycle.

Johnson County Juvenile Community Corrections continues to be a state leader in innovative programming.
